Easy Granny Square Motif

I wanted to share this because I think it's so cute, it's classic and any one can do it.  This is a great way to get newbies to learn to crochet.

Of course you can use colors of your choosing but I like this combination for summer.  I made about 20 of these squares and I plan to make a bag for the market (see picture below)...but you can use it for anything you want.

You can sew them together for a bag; or a blanket (as big or as small as you want); a pillow ( just add the fabric and stuffing); the possibilities are up to your creations.

It's so easy, you can whip these up in a night while watching television; or in a afternoon while enjoying the weather.  Again...I leave it up to you.  But I guarantee you it's fun and the combinations can be uniform (all the same) or random...totally on you.

Materials Needed:
Crochet hook: H/8
Yarn in different colors or scrap yarn (your choice), worsted weight



Let's Go (see stitch guide below):

PIC 1 - base for 4 corners

Round 1:  with light color A - ch 5; sl st in 5th ch from hook, to make a ring.  Ch 2; 2 dc in ring. ch 2; 3 dc; 3 times.  sl st in the top of beg ch 2 & 1st dc made.  Fasten off.  Base for the 4 corners.

PIC 2 - 4 squared corners

Round 2:  with color B - join new color in a corner that's not the last one made.  Ch 2; 2 dc in corner;  ch 2, 3 dc in the same corner.  *ch 2, 3 dc in the next corner, ch 2, 3 dc in the same corner: do this * for next 2 corners. Ch 2, sl st in the top of beg ch 2 & 1st dc made. Fasten off. 4 corners made.

Round 3:  with color C -  join new color in a corner that's not the last one made. Ch 2; 2 dc in corner; ch 2, 3 dc in the same corner. *ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch 2 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in the next corner, ch 2, 3 dc in the same corner: do this * for next 3 sides. Ch 1, sl st in the top of beg ch 2 & 1st dc made. Fasten off. SEE PICTURE ABOVE.

PIC 4 - final round

Round 4:  with color D -  join new color in a corner that's not the last one made. Ch 2; 2 dc in corner; ch 2, 3 dc in the same corner. *ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch 2 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch 2 sp, ch , 3 dc in the next corner, ch 2, 3 dc in the same corner: do this * for next 3 sides. Ch 1, sl st in the top of beg ch 2 & 1st dc made. Fasten off.  Final round made.  SEE PICTURE ABOVE.

Stitch Guide:
space (sp)

slip stitch (sl st): insert hook through ring or stitch, yarn over hook, bring yarn through loop.

chain (ch): yarn over hook, bring yarn through loop.

double crochet (dc): yarn over hook, insert hook through ring or stitch, yarn over hook and bring up loop, yarn over hook, bring yarn through 2 loops, yarn over hook, bring yarn through 2 loops.
